Classical Concepts of Beauty - Course requirements

Classical Concepts of Beauty is an 18-point course given in the first half year. All students must attend the lecture, 10.00 a.m. till 11.40 p.m., every Wednesday in lecture theatre 031 in the basement of the Maths - Cosci Building (aka the Erskine Bldg.). In addition, students may attend a weekly fifty-minute tutorial (sign up in the Philosophy Dept., 6th floor of the History Building). There will be one ninety-minute test (counting for 25% of the final mark). The test will be on April 2nd.

There is a final examination of three hours (counting 50% of the final mark). The date and time for the final exam is June 23, 2.30 - 5.30 PM. In addition to the final examination, there will be an essay of approximately 2500 words on an assigned topic (counting 25% of the final mark). This essay is to be handed in on Friday, June 6th.

The first reading assignment of the course is Plato’s Republic. Students may purchase any translation of this work. Following the Plato, we shall read Aristotle's Poetics. The translation will be supplied on the Internet.
